Preliminary Information for Finland's Autumn-Winter 2026/2027
Nuorgam – Your Ideal Arctic Escape in the EU's Northernmost Village
Whether you are yearning for a peaceful solo journey of self-discovery, a romantic getaway for two, a memorable family adventure, or a fun-filled trip with friends, Nuorgam offers the perfect setting. Designed to delight guests of all ages, the enchantment of this idyllic retreat ensures that almost every visitor leaves with the promise: "We'll certainly be back!"
Situated 500 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Nuorgam is Finland's and the EU's northernmost village. It serves as an excellent base for day trips to Norway and the Arctic Ocean coast. Here, visitors can engage in exciting winter activities like ice fishing safaris on the fells, stay active in the wilderness, or simply relax in a warm bath under the spell of the Northern Lights.
Outstanding Natural Attractions
Teno River: Forming the natural border between Finland and Norway, the Teno River is celebrated for its exceptional fishing and pristine waters. During summer heatwaves, its clear waters and sandy beaches invite swimmers to cool off. Historically, the river has served as a vital thoroughfare connecting people on both banks. Bonds of friendship and kinship run deep, and the local community continues to cooperate in traditional reindeer herding and time-honored fishing methods.
Pulmankijärvi Lake: Formed from an ancient Arctic Ocean fjord, Finland's northernmost lake stretches over 10 kilometers in length. Reached via a scenic road winding through a magnificent fell plateau, the lake is home to freshwater flounder and rare bog heather. The lake and its dramatic river valley offer ideal terrain for hiking and skiing.
Kaldoaivi Wilderness Area: As Finland's largest wilderness area, Kaldoaivi extends into Norway as a vast, roadless fell ecosystem. The landscape varies from steep river valleys to gentle fells, characterized by treeless uplands and fell birch forests. Its fish-rich streams and pools make it highly suitable for experienced hikers and fishermen alike.
Sevetti-Pulmanki Hiking Trail: Starting from Pulmankijärvi, this 60–70 kilometer trail traverses the expansive Kaldoaivi wilderness. The terrain transitions from southern pine heathlands to increasingly barren, birch-dominated fell plateaus in the north, and is open to mountain bikers as well. A dedicated winter trail of approximately 70 kilometers also spans between Sevettijärvi and Pulmanki.
Premium Wilderness Living: Aurora Cottage
Managed by Nights of Northern Lights, Aurora Cottage combines modern comfort with stunning Arctic scenery. Located right on the banks of the Teno River, it is one of the exclusive properties in the Nuorgam area to feature a private outdoor jacuzzi on its own terrace. The property maintains exceptional privacy by the river while remaining just a short distance from the village center and the Norwegian border.
During the winter, the expansive landscape windows and the outdoor jacuzzi offer front-row views of the river, fells, and the Northern Lights. In the summer, guests can easily fish right in front of the cottage. The cabin accommodates up to 4 guests (one double bed and a convertible sofa bed) and features a wood-heated sauna, a cozy fireplace, a well-equipped kitchen, and a barbecue terrace. Laundry facilities, sauna and jacuzzi access, and firewood are fully included.
With zero light pollution and frequently cloudless cold skies, Nuorgam is one of the premier locations on Earth for chasing the Aurora Borealis, with displays visible during 60–70% of winter nights.
